在1970年代后期,多氯联苯是已知的环境污染物,而氯化二恶英(PCDD)和呋喃(PCDF)直到最近才被视为对环境的威胁。此外,关于多氯联苯、*和*的毒性,特别是长期影响的信息很少。
随着越来越多的人证明某些多氯联苯、多氯二苯并对二苯并呋喃同系物具有相当大的毒性,并且毒性明显高于其他同系物,对这些化合物标准品的需求迅速增长。然而,这些化合物的参考标准品很少在市场上可用。
多年来,创立威林顿的科学家为他们自己的研究合成了多氯联苯、多氯二苯并对二苯并呋喃和其他卤代芳香族化合物的单个同系物。对这些化合物的样品和相关化合物的定制合成的需求变得势不可挡,威林顿的成立是为了更快、更有效地做出反应。
1983年4月,威林顿发布了第一份目录,提供多氯联苯、多氯二苯并噁英和*同系物。该目录只有4页长,列出了大约75种单独的化合物。
在随后的几年里,威林顿增加了更多的员工和实验室空间,并致力于大量的研究和开发,提供了1000多种产品。
威林顿将继续其研究工作,目标是开发对环境和人类健康构成风险的化合物的其他参考标准。
